Black Oak Casino Resort Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Black Oak Casino Resort

When you set foot on the sprawling campus that is Black Oak Casino Resort in 2026, it’s hard to imagine that just 25 years ago, this scenic patch of land in Tuolumne was empty. When the casino first opened its doors on May 15, 2001, it was a humble metal building that was home to just a few hundred slot machines. Not only has the casino itself expanded dramatically, but over the past quarter-century, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has worked to transform Black Oak into a full-scale destination resort. By blending gaming, entertainment, hospitality, and family-focused experiences, they’ve set this hidden gem apart from any other property in the Sierra Nevada foothills and Central Valley.

“As someone who has been involved with Black Oak since day one, it’s truly amazing to take a step back and take in all we’ve added and done over the past 25 years,” said Kevin Day, Chairman of the Tuolumne Me-Wuk Tribal Council. “Black Oak Casino Resort provides meaningful employment to hundreds of residents, offers families an unforgettable getaway experience, and has grown into a true cornerstone of Tuolumne County and the surrounding region.”

For anyone who happened to visit Black Oak in its earliest days, it would be shocking to see just how much has been added to the picturesque property just outside downtown Tuolumne City, located about 10 miles east of Sonora. One of the first major undertakings was a dramatic expansion of the initially modest gaming area. In 2005, construction was completed on a massive addition of over 50,000 sq. ft. of gaming space that features 1,100 slot machines, 22 table games, a high-limit playing area, several bars and restaurants, and a large non-smoking gaming section. In addition to the expanded gaming area, Black Oak added Seven Sisters, a fine dining restaurant that sits on the third floor and overlooks the entire property, which has been exceedingly popular with guests since it opened. The project also included a 24-lane bowling alley, a sports bar, and a restaurant. Recently, the bowling alley has been upgraded and remodeled, the arcade has been expanded, and there is now a supervised play center for young children operated by Kids Quest. In 2009, a six-story parking garage was completed that provides ample parking for patrons.

Another notable milestone occurred in 2011 with the opening of the Bear Creek convenience store and gas station. More than just an added amenity, Bear Creek represented an early step toward creating a comprehensive guest experience that extended beyond the casino floor. It features a 24-hour touchless car wash, beer and wine, a wide variety of drinks and snacks, and even made-to-order burritos and tacos. In 2025, Bear Creek underwent a 1,600 sq. ft. expansion and now features fresh groceries, meats, and produce to better serve both travelers and the surrounding community.

The next major leap forward arrived in 2013 with The Hotel, which featured 148 suites, a grand foyer with a coffee shop, a fitness center, a large heated pool, and a hot tub. For the first time, Black Oak guests could enjoy a complete overnight experience, turning what had once been a day trip into a multi-day getaway. In May 2025, The Hotel was elevated even further with a significant expansion and renovation. Not only were the existing 148 rooms completely redesigned and upgraded, but Black Oak also added 48 new suites in a new section of the hotel that now connects to the gaming floor. The pool was also completely redone, and a massive hot tub was added along with a large outdoor television screen to catch the big games. And perhaps most popular of all is the brand new splash zone at The Hotel, a vibrant play area for kids featuring water slides, fountains, and a huge water dump bucket that slowly fills up and spills onto the awaiting children below all day long.

And for those who prefer to soak in the natural beauty of the rolling Sierra Nevada foothills, in 2018, Black Oak Casino Resort added an RV park, which introduced yet another dimension to the property. With nearly 100 RV sites and a thoughtfully designed layout, the park caters to travelers seeking both comfort and a connection to the outdoors. Amenities include a fully-furnished clubhouse, heated pool and spa, a basketball court, pickleball courts, and a large catch-and-release fishing pond.

The following year in 2019, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians negotiated the purchase of Sonora’s only 18-hole golf course, Mountain Springs. After a few months of renovations and improvements, the course reopened and was renamed Teleli in May. This stunning, championship golf course also features a fully-stocked pro shop, driving range, bar, and restaurant, and Black Oak offers various stay-and-play packages for guests of The Hotel.

With every project and expansion, the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has had a singular goal in mind – to make Black Oak Casino Resort the premier destination for families looking to create lifelong memories together. This was further reflected in December 2023 with the opening of Elevate, a state-of-the-art family sports center. Offering an indoor trampoline park, batting cages, sports simulation screens, dodgeball courts, and a junior ninja warrior course, Elevate has proven popular among families and children alike who are looking for a safe and healthy way to stay active.

“We truly want to offer something for people of all ages and interests, and when you look at all the offerings we have here on site, I think it’s safe to say we accomplished that,” said Ty Day Jr., Board Chairman of the Tuolumne Economic Development Authority Board of Directors. “Our team has come together and worked incredibly hard over the past 25 years to make Black Oak the singular destination for family fun in Northern California.”

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Black Oak Casino Resort, there will be a wide variety of events and promotions taking place throughout the month of May. “The weekend of our 25th anniversary is going to be incredibly fun and exciting, both for our guests and for our team,” said Luis Torres, Director of Marketing for Black Oak Casino Resort. “We’ll have a large free fireworks show, cash giveaways, and plenty of great food specials and live music to celebrate our silver anniversary.”
