Chukchansi Powwow Returns Oct. 9–11

COARSEGOLD, CA – The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians will welcome dancers, drummers and visitors from across Indian Country for the annual Chukchansi Powwow at Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino, Oct. 9–11.

This year’s theme, “Spirit of the Drum,” celebrates the role of the drum in bringing people together through rhythm, song and shared tradition. The weekend will feature Grand Entries, traditional dance competitions, drum and hand drum contests, gourd dancing, handgame and cornhole tournaments, arts and crafts, food vendors and other activities.

“Spirit of the Drum reflects the way the drum brings us together and carries our songs and traditions from one generation to the next,” said Deann Kamalani, Chairperson of the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians Tribal Council. “The powwow is a time to honor those who came before us, celebrate the strength of our culture today, and ensure these traditions continue for generations to come. We are proud to welcome our community, fellow tribal nations and guests to gather with us for this meaningful celebration.”

Grand Entry will take place Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at noon, with gourd dancing at 11 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Dance competitions will span Junior, Teen, Adult and Golden Age categories, along with a Potato Dance. The Drum Contest will award $10,000 for first place, with additional cash prizes offered across dance, hand drum and cornhole competitions.

Special performances include Hoops on Friday and Yoztaltepetl Aztec Dancers and The Polynesian Club of Fresno on Saturday. Bleacher seating and complimentary shuttle service from the Chukchansi Gold garage entrance will be available.
