Stillaguamish Tribe Marks 50 Years of Federal Recognition

ARLINGTON, WA – The Stillaguamish Tribe of Indians is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its federal recognition, marking a milestone in the tribe’s history and honoring the generations who worked to preserve its heritage and sovereignty.

The Stillaguamish Tribe will commemorate the anniversary with a celebration and traditional potlatch Oct. 18 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Angel of the Winds Casino Resort. The gathering will bring together tribal members, elders, families, leaders and invited guests to honor the tribe’s history and those who contributed to its recognition.

Central to the anniversary is the legacy of Chief Esther R. Ross, whose leadership and determination were instrumental in the tribe’s effort to gain federal recognition. The celebration will also recognize past tribal leaders, council members and families for their contributions to that effort.

The program will include an opening prayer and food blessing, traditional dance performance, calling of witnesses, guest speakers and presentations from Stillaguamish tribal representatives. Traditional foods will include salmon, crab, clams and oysters, along with additional dishes.

The gathering will recognize the tribe’s accomplishments over the past 50 years while highlighting the cultural traditions and community ties that continue to guide the Stillaguamish people.
