Golf Course Overview
Sitting at the “Cajun Crossroads” in Marksville, Louisiana, the Tamahka Trails Golf Club intermingles with its surrounding creeks, oak and sycamore trees and gentle changes in elevation. Part of the Paragon Casino and Resort, the 230-acre course was designed to exceed the expectations of even the most seasoned golfers. As a result, the course has been included in several tournament rotations, including the Louisiana Senior Four-Ball Championship and the U.S. Golf Association's U.S. Open Qualifier.
Master golf course architect Steve Smyers, with his first course design in Louisiana, has stamped Tamahka Trails with his fondness for the historic courses of Scotland. The outcome is a coupling of Smyers' “new school” design with those of legendary Scottish courses. Adding to the spectacular landscape are the chainsaw woodcarvings of Burt Fleming, including a 3-foot turtle and 30-foot alligator (tamahka is the Tunica-Biloxi tribal word for alligator).
Both the fairways and approaches present fair targets for well-struck shots, but exact full-stroke recovery shots for errant efforts. The par 71 course has numerous bunkers that are unique for their vast dimensions and large, flash faces. The fairway and greenside bunkers demand skillful play and most often thwart direct lines to the target. Though Tamahka Trails doesn't have a great deal of water in play, the design allows the winding creeks and streams to be used to their maximum strategic potential.
Offering four sets of tees to accommodate all levels of play, Tamahka Trails measures 7,019 yards from the back tees, has a USGA slope of 133 and USGA rating of 74.4. Played from the front tees, the course measures 5,087 yards, has a USGA slope of 121 and a USGA rating of 69.5. The massive practice facility includes a large putting green and practice greens with sand bunkers. The driving range has 2.5 acres of tee area and regularly allows the hitting area to be moved to fresh grass.
The clubhouse at Tamahka Trails offers guests panoramic views and a full-service staff to see to it they're relaxed before and after a challenging round of golf. The clubhouse houses men's and women's locker facilities, the Tamahka Trails Grill & Lounge, and a fully stocked pro shop. Lessons are also available, as are club memberships, group rates and accommodations for corporate outings.
