Golf Course Overview
The Devil's Claw, a par 72 course, measures 7,017 yards from the back tees, carries a USGA slope of 131 and a USGA rating of 72.8. The plant palette on The Devil's Claw reflects the palette indigenous to the Gila River, consisting of mesquite, saguaro, Palo Verde, and cottonwood. Blending with the native grasses, the Gila River looks as it did when waters still flowed on the reservation land. With a design dominated by gradual elevation changes, multi-tiered greens, and challenging bunker designs, The Devil's Claw was host to the 2001 and 2002 Gila River Buy.com Classic.
Located at the Gila River Casino at Wild Horse Pass, the Whirlwind Golf Club has intertwined championship golf with the rich cultural heritage of the Gila River Indian Community. The result is a golf property capable of challenging players of all levels. Designed by golf architect Gary Panks, the Whirlwind Golf Club features two 18-hole courses, The Devil's Claw and The Cattail. The courses were designed to be demanding, yet maintain fairness and playability.
The Whirlwind Golf Club also includes an 8,500 sq. ft. clubhouse whose architectural style and décor were influenced by the Gila River Indian Community. The clubhouse features a golf pro shop, men's and women's locker facilities and a full service restaurant. A 3,000 sq. ft. expansion was completed in January of 2004, adding an individual and group seating area in the gorgeous Phoenix setting.
